(Polain catalogued the two as a single edition, having never seen copies bound separately). Anonymous in this edition, the second work, De laudibus Mariae , is attributed in some manuscripts to Albertus Magnus, but was actually written in the mid-13th century by a Paris theologian, Richardus de Sancto Laurentio. In the second prologue Richardus explains that he was urged to write the work by many Cistercians, and has omitted his name from a sense of unworthiness. The first work, Mariale , is attributed here, as in most manuscripts, to Albertus Magnus, and was only recently recognized as not authentic. Possibly of Austrian origin, it dates from the mid-13th century, and used Richardus de Sancto Laurentio's treatise as one of its sources. Active from ca. 1460 to his death in 1478, Johann Mentelin, Strassburg's first printer, did not date or sign any of his books until 1473. The dates attributed to most of Mentelin's editions are therefore based on external evidence, mainly dates of purchase or rubrication, and on the modifications of his type and other typographical practices. A terminus ante quem for the present edition was provided by a copy of the two works bound together, sold by Baer, catalogue 745/418, and more recently owned by George Abrams (Sotheby's New York, 16 November 1989, lot 3), which bears an inscription by its rubricator dated 1473.
