Woodcut device on title, engraved medallion portrait on *4v, 8- and 5-line woodcut historiated initials. (Title lightly soiled, edge dye running into some margins, some light marginal spotting.) Contemporary or near-contemporary calf, sides with gilt rule frame and centred with an arabesque in gilt, edges dyed yellow (rebacked preserving much of the original spine, sides dampstained and with some wear, corners repaired). Provenance : cancelled title signature -- A. Bandini (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION of Alberti's history of Italy: the best and most desirable of the numerous editions of this work issued between 1550 and 1631. Alberti's rich geographical and historical treatise, which also touches on the local curiosities of each region, is sometimes considered as a companion volume to Biondo's Italia Illustrata . Alberti makes a brief reference, on leaf 43 verso, to Vespucci's New World voyage. BM/STC, Italian , p. 14.
