Beschreibung:

Albert Bierstadt American, 1830-1902 Portion of the Jungfrau from Grindelwald, 1867 Signed ABierstadt. (ll); inscribed as titled and dated 1867 on an old label affixed to the stretcher Oil on paper laid down on canvas 19 3/8 x 13 3/4 inches Provenance: Marbella Gallery, New York, as Mountain Landscape Albert Bierstadt spent considerable time in Switzerland, first making sketching tours there with Worthington Whittredge William Stanley Haseltine and Sanford Robinson Gifford in the mid-1850s while part of the circle of American artists residing in Dusseldorf. Following his marriage in 1866 Bierstadt traveled to Europe with his bride, Rosalie, returning once again to Switzerland, where he was impressed with the mountainous landscape. By this time, he was a celebrated painter of the American West, selling his views of Yosemite and the Rocky Mountains for unprecedented prices. In a letter written by Rosalie in 1867, she recounted that "I am now sitting on a side hill from what place splendid views are obtained of the opposite chain of mountains. Albert is perched nearby on his sketching stool making an oil study of the Jungfrau. He has almost 50 studies." (Letter, archives, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; cited in Richard S. Trump, Life and Works of Albert Bierstadt diss., Ohio State University, 1963.) This view of the Jungfrau from Grindelwald, rendered with the fluid brushwork that characterizes the artist's compositions in oil on paper, dates from that sojourn. A handwritten label on the stretcher identifies the scene as "Portion of the Jungfrau from Grindelwald 1867." Estate of Charles Brush
Frame rubbing. Could use a light clean. Appears to be some scattered inpainting along the edges. Two small spots of inpainting in the center. Could not detect further restoration.
