It is only the second geological work on the Hudson River (Amos Eaton's Index was published two years prior) and is preceded by only a handful of other American works on the general subject. “In August, 1817, Dr. Samuel Akerly… read before the N.Y. Lyceum an essay on the geology of the Hudson River and vicinity. This was published the year following … accompanied by a colored section of the country from the neighborhood of Sandy Hook, New Jersey, northward through the Highlands in New York toward the Catskills” ( Merrill ).
