Kuhni"), gouache on board, 30 x 30 inches and 19 1/2 x 24 inches, most with vellum overlay with penciled notes, 6 with Lockheed label, one depicting a view of Air Force One in flight and the remaining depicting interior views. Although Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first president to fly in an aircraft while in office and to have a specific aircraft assigned to him, it wasn't until an incident in 1953 when President Eisenhower's plane, Air Force 8610, crossed paths with a commercial flight, Eastern Air Lines 8610, that the need for a special designation was realized. That aircraft, a Lockheed VC-121A-LO Constellation, became the first to use the Air Force One callsign. The above selection of Lockheed concept designs for Air Force One are undated, but appear to be from a 1960s / early 1970s bid to win over the contract from Boeing, who had supplied all Air Force One airplanes after the original group. They depict the jet in flight, staff seating, the sleeping quarters, an office space, guest quarters, a conference room, and guest and staff seating. The depiction of Air Force One in flight is signed by celebrated illustrator Otto Kuhni, also known for his Hot Wheels designs.
