Etched title to vol.I, portrait of the author and 265 plates, all by Giovanni Battista Galestruzzi. (Some browning and spotting.) CONTEMPORARY ROMAN RED MOROCCO GILT, near-uniform, bound for Ferdinando and Flavio Orsini, Dukes of Bracciano, the covers with their crowned arms, supported by putti , within a central octagon enclosed by a panel with large cornerpieces à petits fers , broad outer border composed from various roll-tools, flat spines gilt, g.e., (neat repairs to head and foot of spines and corners). Provenance : Ferdinando and Flavio Orsini, Dukes of Bracciano (bindings); duc de la Vallière (see his Catalogue III, 5519: bookseller's note). FIRST EDITION of this important early work on antique cameos and intaglios. Volume I contains the Barberini collection (Agostini was antiquario to Cardinal Francesco Barberini), vol.II the cameos and other discoveries from the "auguste ruine della gran Roma". The first volume is bound by Gregorio Andreoli to a decorative scheme which found favour with Queen Christina of Sweden; the second volume was bound to match eleven years later by another shop. Ferdinando Orsini was succeeded on his death in 1667 by his son Flavio, the last Orsini of the Bracciano line. (2)
