Beschreibung:

After Sir Godfrey Kneller (British, 1646-1723) Equestrian Portrait of William III Signed indistinctly l.l. Sanguine on laid paper, 18 1/2 x 16 3/8 in. (46.8 x 41.5 cm), unmatted, unframed. Condition: Tack holes and wear along the edges, small repair l.l. edge, paper is lined for support. N.B. The drawing at hand relates to an allegorical portrait of William III (1650-1702) painted by Sir Godfrey Kneller in 1701. The portrait, which was probably commissioned by William himself, shows the King as peacemaker, returning from negotiations that led to the signing of the Peace of Ryswick on September 20, 1697, that settled the Nine Years War. He is surrounded by allegorical figures, while Astraea, the personification of Justice, floats above. The original painting was commissioned for the wall of the Presence Chamber at Hampton Court Palace, where it still hangs (RCIN 403986).
