After Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) Suite Vollard: Portrait of Ambroise Vollard Lithograph, 35 x 24cm Edition Year 1990/1992 Editor Stadischen Mulheim an de Ruhr No. 160/300 Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939) was born in the Ile de la R?union, the French island colony in the Indian Ocean. In 1887 he moved to Paris where he opened a gallery on the Rue des Appennins. His move to Paris coincided with the artistic upheaval at the end of the nineteenth century and the great artistic developments of the first half of the twentieth century. During this period Vollard became a pioneer in introducing the general public to many of the artists who were eventually to become household names; C?zanne, Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse had exhibitions organised by Vollard as well as groups like the Nabis and the Fauves. His client list included most of the great collectors of that period. The year 2007 was important in terms of awakening renewed interest in Ambroise Vollard and his contributions to European art. A major exhibition titled 'C?zanne to Picasso: Ambroise Vollard, Patron of the Avant-Garde' was assembled and shown during 2007 at the Metropolitian Museum of Art New York, the Art Institute Chicago and the Mus?e D'Orsay Paris. On show were more than two hundred works of art that were part of his history. In 1927 Vollard Comissioned Pablo Picasso to produce etchings to accompany texts by the poet Andr? Suar?s. It took until 1934 for Picasso to complete 97 etchings. After that the history of the Vollard Suite becomes unclear. The first edition was printed in 1938, but the 250 sets, comprising 100 works (25,000 sheets) were not assembled until after the liberation of France in 1945. Ambroise Vollard never saw the completed works, he died in 1939. In 1937 Picasso to round up the suite to 100 plates made four portraits of Vollard. Only three were used in the suite, lot 143 being one of them. In 1990 the Picasso family authorised an unprecedented print recreation. This authorised recreation was produced in a very limited and private edition, and was published by the Stadischen Mulheim den Ruhr Museum in Germany. The paper used is the same rare high quality paper used by Picasso in the 1930s.
