AFTER DAVID WATSON STEVENSON (SCOTTISH 1842-1904) Bust of Sir John Fowler (1817-1898) Bronze, 36 cm high from base Inscribed to the base Sir John Fowler was a British engineer, born on July 15th 1817 in Wadsley, a town near Sheffield, England. Fowler established his career in London as a civil engineer where he worked on a variety of projects, such as the extension of the Metropolitan Railway, which later became the London Underground, the world's first subway system. Fowler continued working on several notable projects in the capital, including the construction of Victoria Station between 1866-67, but perhaps his greatest achievement was designing and overseeing construction of the great cantilever bridge over the Firth of Forth from 1882 to 1890, together with his partner Benjamin Baker Firth of Forth was one of the first cantilever bridges and was the world's longest span for several years after its construction. Fowler was made a baronet in 1890. He died in 1898.
