Afrika Islam and Ice-T's own custom-made, stage-worn Zulu Nation and Rhyme Syndicate pendants, ca. 1982-1984 (Rhyme Syndicate pendant, ca. 1988). Four Zulu Nation and one Rhyme Syndicate handmade pendants, four in the shape of the Africa, the first with a green ground stamped with 'Zulu / Nation' and a raised fist, the second on a red ground stamped 'Zulu / Nation / Gordy-B' with a raised fist, 'Rhyme Syndicate' pendant affixed with a raised lion's head medallion, the last painted in patent leather centering an 'A,' together with a leather and hand-painted circular leather pendant centering an 'Afrika Islam" banner with crescent moon and star tied with a chord, the largest 6 by 6 in. (15 by 15.24 cm.), the smallest 3 by 2¾ in. He started by learning to remix tracks under the tutelage of Afrika Bambaataa before going on to become a legendary DJ, hosting one of the first-ever Hip Hop radio shows, being a key member of the Rock Steady Crew, and forging a long-standing collaborative relationship with superstar Ice T. Originally conceived in 1987 by Ice T & Afrika Islam, the Rhyme Syndicate was a collective of emcees and producers performing under and associated with Rhyme $yndicate Records. The Hip Hop producers, DJs, and lyricists set out to unite West and East Coast rap, starting with the 1988 compilation album, Rhyme Syndicate Comin' Through. Zulu Nation is an international Hip Hop awareness group dedicated to “peace, love, unity, and having fun.” Starting in the late '70s in New York City, the Zulu Nation would convene youth events that combined all the various elements that now fall under the cultural umbrella of Hip Hop.
