Verso with pencil note: "Exeter, Calif." Cattle ranching and agriculture were the main industries of the central California town, reaching its peak at the early 20th century and attracting migrant workers. The 1910 Federal Census counted 1,458 residents, the vast majority of the whom were white, though there were 31 Japanese people, 36 Mexicans, 3 Chinese men, and 1 American Indian. Remarkably, there is only one Black person living in Exeter proper, a 12 years old adolescent by the name of Henry Page who worked as a servant in the home of Thomas Dungan on B Street. Though the population tripled by 1920, the African American population remained nearly non-existent. Exeter is in Tulare County, the same county as Allensworth, the all-Black community founded in 1908 by Allen Allensworth.
