ADMIRAL SIR GEORGE BACK (1796-1878) Island Portage signed, inscribed and dated 'May 16th. 1825 Lieut. Back Island Portage .9', watercolour 6 x 8in. (15.2 x 20.3cm.) A fine finished watercolour illustrating an incident during the early part of Sir John Franklin's second overland expedition. The expedition reached Fort William on the northern shore of Lake Superior on the 10th May 1825. Franklin and Dr. Richardson then went ahead in one canoe whilst Back was left to bring up the three remaining canoes. It has not been possible to establish the exact location of the present drawing, but given the date, it is clearly in the vicinity of Fort William. The expedition did not meet up again until the 23rd July.
