Beschreibung:

ADMIRAL SIR GEORGE BACK (1796-1878) Sketchbook of eleven leaves and one loose leaf bound in original marbled wrappers, signed 'George Back Trent' on the inside cover, dated 30 April-20 June 1818 and inscribed with locations on the drawings; pencil, grey wash, watercolour,6¼ x 9½in. (15.7 x 24.1cm.). A FINE VISUAL RECORD OF THE 'FIRST MODERN VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY IN THE SPITZBERGEN SEAS' (DNB). The expedition, led by Captain David Buchan on board the Dorothea, with second in command Lieutenant (later Sir) John Franklin (1786-1847) commanding the hired brig Trent. The Trent's second in command was Lieutenant (later Rear-Admiral) Frederick Beechey (1796-1856), Back served as Mate. The expedition was instructed to 'pass between Spitzbergen and Greenland, use their best endeavours to reach the pole, and thence, if possible, to shape a course direct for Behring's Straits' (DNB). They sailed on 25 April 1818, sighted Spitzbergen on 26 May, and without difficulty reached navigated the western coast as far North as Vogel Sang. They were twice driven into the pack ice. The Dorothea was so damaged by the second collision that Captain Buchan took the decision to abandon any further attempts at exploration and they turned south, reaching England on 22 October 1818. An account of the voyage was eventually published by Beechey in 1843 ( A Voyage of Discovery towards the North Pole ). The present sketchbook contains 25 drawings (including 16 of spitzbergen and its outlying islands, all but three coastal views made from on board the Trent) which allow one to follow the progress of the expedition (each is carefully identified, some are dated) until the first of two potentially disastrous collisions with the pack ice (this is recorded by a fine two-page pencil sketch, made from the ice-flow, of the two ships held-fast, dated June 20th). The final leaf consists of rather incongrous sketches of arctic flora. Franklin was apparently much impressed by Back and his artistic abilities, and he was appointed to accompany Franklin on his expedition in the following year.
