In this final, remarkable chapter of his political career, the former President took a seat in the House of Representatives where he battled tirelessly on behalf of the anti-slavery cause, especially the so-called "gag-rule" passed by Southern lawmakers to prevent the presentation of abolitionist petitions in the House.
