Boldly signed, with a hint of a tremor, in the broad blank upper margin of the sheet. ONE OF A VERY FEW SIGNED IMAGES OF THE 6TH PRESIDENT, SIGNED THE YEAR AFTER HIS SUCCESSFUL DEFENSE OF THE AMISTAD MUTINEERS No President before John Quincy Adams is believed to have signed or inscribed a portrait of himself. But as former President, during his long battle in the House against the annexation of Texas, and the "gag rule" imposed by southern congressmen, Adams apparently signed a very few portrait engravings. Three nearly identical examples may be cited: one in the Wesley M. Marans Collection (Christie's, 17 April 1996, lot 104); another in the Victor Jacobs Collection (sale, Sotheby's, 29 October 1996) and a third in the Douglas Campbell collection (sale, Christie's, 19 December 2002, lot 285). THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED SIGNED EXAMPLE OF THIS PORTRAIT. Engraved from a photograph, it shows the balding former president standing next to a table on which large books are piled. As far as we are aware, this is the only John Quincy Adama portrait that is dated, and the only example to add his residence ("of Quincy"). The portrait is dated one week before election day, a vote which won him yet another term in Congress.
