ADAMS COLLECTS A DEBT FOR JOHN HANCOCK The brothers Joseph and Sylvanus Drew had promised in 1768 to pay Boston merchant John Hancock the sum of £80 for "certain goods, Wares & Merchandizes," and having "neglected & refused" their obligations to pay over the ensuing five years, it was an easy matter for lawyer John Adams to win this order of attachment against the "goods or estate" of the defendants, or failing that, "the Body of the said Joseph & Sylvanus [Drew]." In his note on the verso, Adams writes: "Mr. Officer, Attach. sufficient or hold to Bail, by order of your obedient, J. Adams." A document connecting two important Boston patriots. While Adams occasionally performed legal work for Hancock in the years before the Revolution, documents recording their association are uncommon.
