John Adams recommends an appointment for a veteran navy surgeon--a veteran of the Revolutionary War, the Quasi-war with France and" with Manly, Whipple, Barry, Talbot, Preble at Tripoli…" "…Dr. Peter St. Medard of Boston, [who] has served under the old Congress under President Washington and all the Subsequent Administrations, with Manly, Whipple, Barry, Talbot, Preble at Tripoli, and I know not … with how many others. He has Served as a Physician and Surgeon to the Town of Boston in their Almshouse, and now holds place in the Navy Yard at Charleston by a temporary appointment. He is a Member of our Massachusetts Society of medical gentlemen, and has invariably maintained a fair Character and a reputation for Skill Industry and Fidelity…" The French-born St. Medard (1756-1822) spent his early years as a surgeon aboard French ships plying the Caribbean, some of which appear to have been involved in the slave trade. In 1778, the British captured St. Medard, who, after his release, found himself in Boston where he served aboard several American privateers through the close of the Revolutionary War. In 1799, John Adams commissioned St. Medard as a surgeon in the United States Navy and assigned him to the U.S.S. Constitution , where he served from its first tour in 1799 to 1802. In the latter year, St. Medard transferred to the frigate New York where he served in the Barbary Wars. In 1805, citing exhaustion from a long life at sea, St. Medard obtained an appointment at the Charles Town Navy Yard as a recruiting officer.
