George Adams (1750-1795) was mathematical instrument maker to George III, an appointment he inherited from his father. This was his first in a series of illustrated textbooks on the physical sciences, with others concerning the microscope, optics, and the barometer. His writings had a religious emphasis which helped 'combat the growing errors of materialism, infidelity and anarchy', according to The Gentleman's Magazine.
