Adair, James (circa 1709-1783) The History of the American Indians. London: Printed for Edward & Charles Dilly, 1775. First edition, large quarto, [pi]2, A-Z4, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Nn4; half-title present, illustrated with large folding map; bound in contemporary half sheep, marbled paper boards (both boards detached, spine quite dry, preliminary material detached, in need of resewing), a large copy, 10 3/4 x 8 1/4. Sabin 155; ESTC T86841; http://estc.bl.uk/T86841. Irish-born Adair lived for more than forty years in North America, chiefly trading with the Chickasaw people in South Carolina. He was also involved in political upheaval during King George's War on a trade mission to the Eastern Choctaw. His work in such areas did not always end well. Adair's close association with Chief Red Shoes, who sided with the British, led to a rift among the Choctaw resulting in Red Shoes's assassination.
