Chromolithograph of Lincoln produced by E. C. Middleton of Cincinnati, OH, framed to 19 x 22 in., ca 1863-1865. Middleton's engraving firm pioneered the chromolithograph process, by which oil paint is applied to a stone plate by hand, and the print is then laid down on canvas in order to resemble an oil painting. For the first time, chromolithography allowed for the mass-production of sophisticated multicolored prints. Middleton's prints came pre-framed and were purchased through agents by subscription, rather than in shops. Condition: Few minor chips in frame. Print not examined outside frame.
