Beschreibung:

ABBOTT, BERENICE (1898-1981) [Lucia Joyce dancing] , 1926-7, early and possibly vintage printings (when examined under ultra-violet, there appears to be no fluorescence). Two gelatin silver prints in the photographer's double mat, each 3 3/8 x 2 3/4 (86 x 70 mm), both signed by Abbott in pencil on the mat below the image (l.r.), each signed by her in ink on the verso of each image, together with "Berenice Abbott/Photograph" stamps. At one point double hinged to the back mat, still adhered to the lower corners, overall in fine condition, from Marlborough Galleries, New York, 1977. While Abbott's portraits of Joyce are quite common, those of Lucia Joyce, Joyce's daughter by Nora Barnacle, are rare, and exceedingly striking. Lucia Joyce was a highly trained professional dancer, as evidenced by her poses here. Her later career is tragic; she succumbed in the 1930s to mental illness, eventually diagnosed as schizophrenia, and was institutionalized from 1936 until her death in 1982. C
