Abbey Road Studios: A Rare EMI RS114 Limiter Made For Abbey Road Studios, circa 1957, serial no. 57090D, the mono tube limiter-amplifier designed by EMI Audio Designer Mike Batchelor, the front reading LIMITER TYPE RS114, E.M.I. RECORDS LTD., MADE IN ENGLAND in gold lettering, the device with input and output levels to the front, switch and dial adjustments for operating and recovery time, weighting, limiter, and mains, with Ernest Turner milliamperes gauge, model no. 325, serial no. 1718402, and dB gauge model 325, serial no. 17187393; the back with ports for mains, output, and input, housed in camo green metal casing with hinged lid to reveal internals, the front and sides with carrying handles, 22 1/2in x 11 1/2in x 12in (57cm x 29cm x 30.5cm)Footnotes"Without a doubt, the EMI RS114 Limiter [identical to this Lot] was a significant component of the Beatles' 1962-1964 period. It was used on nearly every session and was a major contributing sound to the group's first records." - Kevin Ryan & Brian Kehew, Recording The Beatles, 2006 The RS114 is a highly influential device in the history of recording equipment, limiting volume peaks without compromising the rest of the sound. Its design was a significant improvement on that of the earlier RS98 limiter. The present limiter is one of 12 known to have been constructed by EMI for Abbey Road Studios - six in 1956, and another six in 1957. The serial number denotes that this example was one of the six produced in 1957. The 'RS' stands for 'Recording Studios', a prefix which means that the limiter was produced to meet Abbey Road Studios' requested specifications. In a similar fate to the RS98 models before them, the RS114 limiters would have been dispersed from the Abbey Road Studios once newer models were developed. Despite the complexity of the push-pull adjustments required to function, the RS114 provided a valuable solution for recording without restricting volume peaks - a feature which was otherwise difficult to apply in recording studios. The limiter required regular recalibration by engineers, sometimes even mid-session, in a sign that technology was constantly pushed to try and match EMI's forward-thinking ambitions. RS114 Limiters were favoured by EMI Engineer Norman Smith and such devices would have been used for the vocal and guitar sounds on early Beatles singles and albums between 1962 and 1964, including Please Please Me (1963), With The Beatles (1963), and A Hard Day's Night (1964).
