A YOUNG PRINCE USURPING THE THRONE MUGHAL INDIA, CIRCA 1710 From a poetical romance relating to Shah 'Alam I, opaque pigments heightened with gold and silver on paper, depicting a young prince lifting an elder king from his throne and ready to throw him to the floor, his horse posted on the foreground, watched by a crowd of armed noblemen brandishing their swords in an agressive manner, the scene set in the courtyard of a palace, the silver walls with cusped niches and gold floral decoration, laid down on salmon cardboard, the reverse with a panel of silhouette lions and deer against a pink-speckled background, each animal outlined in gold, with gold floral sprays and garlands outlined in black between, with gilt floral borders, the painting with minor rubbing, waterstaining to the upper margin, some wormholing to the borders, otherwise in very good condition Painting 12¼ x 8½in. (31 x 21.6cm.); page 16 x 10½in. (40.6 x 27.3cm.)
