A William III walnut eight-day longcase clock William Grimes, London, circa 1695-1700 The eight-day five finned pillar inside countwheel bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by seconds pendulum and outside strike locking detent, the 11.25 inch square brass dial with subsidiary seconds dial, ringed winding holes and scroll border engraved calendar aperture to the matted centre within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with stylised sword hilt half hour markers, Arabic five minutes to narrow outer track and signed W’m Grimes. Londini fecit to lower edge, with fine pierced blued steel hands and angles applied with winged cherub mask and foliate scroll cast spandrels with scroll engraved infill between, the case with ogee moulded cornice and floral trail pierced fret to frieze above glazed fixed dial surround applied with Solomonic three-quarter columns to front angles, the sides with rectangular windows and conforming quarter columns applied next to bargeboards at the rear, the trunk with convex throat moulding over 42 inch rectangular door centred with an oval lenticle and veneered with three pairs of book-matched panels within a herringbone banded surround, the sides veneered with twin herringbone bordered panels, the base with stepped ogee top moulding and conforming book-matched panel within further crossbanded surround over bun feet, 204cm (80.25ins) high. Provenance: Private collection, Hampshire (ref. C16); purchased at Sotheby’s, London, 19th December 1991 (lot 167) for £6,800 hammer. William Grimes is recorded in Loomes, Brian The Clockmakers of Britain 1286-1700 as born in Shilton, Leicestershire in 1737 and is thought to have trained under his uncle, Thomas Grimes, before moving to London by 1682 when he was made a Free Brother of the Clockmakers’ Company. William Grimes worked from Hatton Garden, London and amongst his apprentices was John Topping (1691) who subsequently became well known for his complex longcase clocks with astronomical functions.
