A View of Frankpledge for ?Warboys, near Huntingdon, manuscript in Latin, on vellum, 2 sheets stitched together, officials names on dorse, edge torn at head (effacing the name of the manor), some creasing and staining, a little yellowed, 990 x 246mm., taken on the Thursday before the feast of St. Michael the Archangel in the 22nd year of the reign of Richard II, [26th September 1398]. *** A particularly detailed record of the payments the tenants had to make, in the vicinity of Huntingdonshire or perhaps Northamptonshire, close to the Fens. There are mentions of Huntingdon, Offord and Rothewell (Northants). The place itself is on a river or Fen, as there is mention of ditching by the Newkeye and of obstruction of water at the bridge, as well as of the Flodegat. View of Frankpledge was generally held at a manor court. A group of neighbours, known as a tithing, was held responsible for producing one of their number who had committed an offence. The offenders would usually be given fines. For example, John Manyharth was fined a penny for blocking a waterway next to plots of land, and Thomas, son of John Lawman was fined twopence for fishing with a 'showenet' in the ditch next to the Holwye. The jury also made certain orders concerning the management of the land, such as ordering that all the trees growing around Madecroft, in Warboys should be cut down before the Feast of St. Martin. villagers are named as being of Offord, from either Offord Cluny or Offord D'arcy and Hemingford, all in Huntingdonshire. Various officials are named on the dorse of the roll; namely the bailiffs, the constables, the keepers of the mill etc.
