A Victorian silver trompe l'oeil chestnut-dish Mark of John Mortimer and John Samuel Hunt, London, 1840 Formed as a circular dinner-plate with an elaborately folded napkin upon it, the plate with gadrooned and bacchic mask border, the napkin finely decorated to simulate damask with floral and foliate sprigs on a textured ground, the upper fold hinged as a cover, engraved with a coat-of-arms with earl's coronet above, marked under plate, inside cover, and on bolts, the plate also stamped 'MORTIMER & HUNT' and with pattern number 10in. (25.5cm.) diam. 68oz. (2,141gr.) The arms are those of Stanhope for George, 6th Earl of Chesterfield (1805-1866). He married in 1830, Anne Elizabeth, daughter of Cecil, 1st Baron Forester (d.1828). The title became extinct on the death of the 13th Earl of Chesterfield and 7th Earl Stanhope in 1967.
