A Victorian silver-gilt twenty-piece garniture Mark of Frederick Elkington Birmingham, 1864 A pair of five-light candelabra, each on four foliage bracket feet, with beaded and gadrooned borders, the vase-shaped stem flanked by two seated putti holding symbols of victory and chased with flying winged putti holding floral festoons, with down curved acanthus foliage scroll branches, supporting gadrooned wax pans and vase-shaped sockets chased alternatively with ivy and vine foliage, the similar central light, with detachable nozzles, engraved with monogram 'DOdeR', fully marked 22in. (56cm.) high 279ozs. (8,680gr.) A pair of ewers and sideboard dishes, the vase-shaped ewers on spreading bases chased with foliage and panels of bats and doves, the bodies cast and chased with panels of putti and infant bacchanals holding drapery, applied at the shoulder with classical medallions and at the front with cockerel, the waisted neck chased with panels of scrolling foliage, the handle terminating in grotesque masks and rising from an applied owl, the circular dishes with broad borders chased with panels of dancing panels of infant bacchanals and gods and goddesses with musical trophies between, the central bosses cast and chased in high relief with classical gods and goddesses within a matted band with scrolling foliage, similarly engraved to previous, fully marked, the dishes stamped 'ELKINGTON & CO, RD. 103438', the reverse 'ELKINGTON & CO 15434' and '15435'. (10,042gr,) A pair of dessert-stands, the shaped oval bases resting on bracket feet chased with cornucopia, the sides engraved with similar monogram, the centre chased with infant bacchanals, the openwork scroll stem applied with masks of river-gods and with floral festoons, the fluted oval bowl with chased foliage border applied in the ends with ram's masks and at the sides with foliage, with ruby glass liners and wooden base, marked on bases 12in. (30cm.) high gross. 142ozs. (4,442gr.) A set of four sweetmeat dishes of similar form, with baluster and fluted stems, with ruby glass liners, marked on bases 6in. (16cm.) long 74ozs. (2,311gr.) A set of four goblets, each on shaped quatrefoil base cast and chased with paterae and foliage, the bodies chased with two panels of a putto holding ribbons with chased foliate panel between, with plain sleeves, the bases stamped '7145 ELKINGTON & CO', marked on bodies and sleeves 5in. A pair of circular sugar-bowls, each on similar quatrefoil bases, the bodies applied with four scenes of winged putti holding floral garlands, with swing handles applied with classical female busts, each with sugar sifter, the stem chased with fruit and with a female figure in Renaissance dress, the bowls stamped 'ELKINGTON & CO', marked on sides and sifters the bowls 4in. (12cm.) diam. 33ozs. (1,033gr.) A large oval two-handled flower-bowl, the shaped quatrefoil base resting on four crest lobed and matted feet and applied with two goat's masks and two cartouches and chased with scrolling foliage on matting, the body cast and chased with panels of Ceres and Bacchus with infant attendant, with masks of the gods and goddesses above, with satyr's masks, thyrsi and drop-wreath handles and waved rim, the cover pierced with scalework and surmounted by a standing figure of Victory holding two wreaths, with detachable liner, stamped 'ELKINGTON & CO', fully marked 18in. (46cm.) long 267ozs. (8,320gr.) A shaped oblong mirror-plateau, on four scroll and foliage feet, the sides applied with two oak-leaf and laurel cartouches and chased with ribbon-tied laurel-wreath festoons, enclosing vacant medallions between reed-and-tie and egg-and-dart borders, the centre fitted with two detachable seated symbolic figures, marked on plateau, figures and plinths The plateau: 45in.
