Beschreibung:

A VICTORIAN PLASTER SECTION FROM THE PARTHENON FRIEZE, ATTRIBUTED TO D. BRUCCIANI & CO PROBABLY LATE 19TH CENTURY, AFTER THE ANTIQUE Cast with horsemen in relief, inset with oval metal plaque with English Royal Coat of Arms and cast with inscription for the British Museum 102cm high, 132cm wide Catalogue Note: This panel is derived from the circa 5th century BC marble frieze that was removed from the Parthenon, Athens, by Lord Elgin during the early 19th century, and is currently in the collection of the British Museum. Leading Italo-English Formatore Domenico Brucciani is known to have overseen the production of plaster replicas from the British Museum (he is recorded to have produced casts for the museum as early as 1857), and it is likely that the present lot originated in his workshop or that of his company (which continued after Brucciani's death circa 1880). His casts of the marbles are noted in their trade catalogue: List of casts from sculptures in the Departments of Antiquities, sold by Messrs. Brucciani' Co, London: 1905 Similar casts of the frieze by Brucciani dated circa 1895 are in the collection of the Harvard Art Museums (for example inv. nos. 1895.32-1895.34)
