A Victorian mahogany wall mounted mercury barograph Negretti and Zambra, London, circa 1870 The four pillar single chain fusee timepiece movement with anchor escapement regulated by lenticular bob pendulum, the 7 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial inscribed NEGRETTI & ZAMBRA, Inst. Makers to Her Majesty, LONDON to centre, with steel hands and canted bezel, set beneath barograph chart drum driven by a pinion rising from gearing connected to the rear of the movement fusee arbor, the recording pointer mounted on the right hand side sliding against a silvered brass scale calibrated in barometric inches from 28 to 32, connected to a lever engaging with the movement so that it records for a period of fifteen minutes every hour as well as being connected via line and pulley lever to a float resting on top of the mercury level in the syphon tube fitted to the case backboard, the upper section fitted with a mercury Fahrenheit scale thermometer, the base with spirit level, the case with extended backboard fitted with hanging hoop and iron cylinder protecting the top of the mercury cistern siphon tube within behind an open triangular pediment over plain frieze and break-arch glazed door incorporating foliate carved infill to upper quadrant panels, the sides with applied large scale fluted strip pilasters over simple moulded skirt base, 111cm (43.75ins) high. Provenance: The collection of the late R. J. Taylor formerly of Huntsgreen Farm, Boxford, near Newbury. The firm of Negretti & Zambra are recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as being established in 1850 when a partnership between Enrico Negretti and Joseph Warren Zambra was formed. The firm became one of the most prolific makers of scientific instruments and continued trading well into the 20th century. The general design and layout of the current lot was devised by Admiral Sir Alexander Milne (1806-96) in 1857. By 1864 Negretti and Zambra, James Hicks, Casartelli and others were producing their own versions of his design for sale to the general public (see Banfield, Edwin BAROMETERS, Aneroid and Barographs page 108).
