A VERY RARE SET OF SIX PAINTED AND GILDED POTTERY FIGURES OF ENTERTAINERS TANG DYNASTY Comprising: a dancing court lady; two male dancers; two male musicians; and a 'lion' dancer, all caught in a particular moment of a rhythmic dance, all with traces of gilt and green, orange, red, white and black pigment The 'fat' lady with long-sleeved, flowing robes following the lines of her figure, right foot crossed over her left, upper body twisted in the opposite direction, head facing her outstretched right arm hidden within the fluttering long sleeve, her left arm bent at the elbow with the hand behind her back under the swathes of robe, her facial features finely detailed with delicate eyes, nose and slightly parted lips between the chubby cheeks and beneath the three flopped-forward poufs of her full coiffure--10½in. (26.8cm.) high; the pair of seated male musicians dressed in loosely belted, long-sleeved tunics split on both sides at the hips to show the loose pantaloons, close-fitting caps with flopped-forward peaks, one musician seated with both feet resting on the ground and hands raised to his lips as if to blow on a wind instrument; the other musician seated with one foot on the ground and the other raised with knee bent at chest level, the elbows bent and hands held out as if to hold a musical instrument, his head slightly cocked to one side--8¾in. (22.2cm.) and 9in. (23.8cm.) high; the pair of male dancers modeled in approximate mirror image, one foot stepping forward, hips twisted, one arm raised with elbow bent, long sleeve falling back to expose a clenched fist, the other hand held to one side and hidden by the flapping wide sleeve, the head cocked to one side and surmounted by the close-fitting cap with flopped-forward double peak, wearing loose, belted, knee-length tunics and pantaloons and standing on rectangular bases--10in. (25.4cm.) high; the 'lion' dancer miming the crouching beast with raised haunches and head lowered above its bent forelegs, and hidden under the furry costume, the lion mask well modeled with furrowed brow, bulging eyes and mouth open in a roar to show the teeth--9in. (22cm.) long (6)
