A VERY RARE MING WUCAI 'BOYS' SQUARE BOX AND COVER WANLI SIX-CHARACTER MARK IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE AND OF THE PERIOD (1573-1619) The box is decorated on each side with children at play in a garden landscape within a double-outlined frame, under a key-fret band surrounding the exterior of the mouth rim. The flat square lid is similarly decorated, surmounted by a finial modelled as a small dog, and fitting neatly onto the recessed rim of the box, all raised on a short foot ring, the base bearing the reign mark in underglaze-blue. 5 ¼ in.
