A VERY RARE LATE MING CARVED THREE-COLOUR LACQUER BOX AND COVER WANLI INCISED AND GILT CYCLICAL YI WEI YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1595 AND OF THE PERIOD The domed cover crisply carved with a central medallion depicting a bearded official seated before a large screen within a walled garden setting flanked by attendants, ornamental rocks and flowering bushes and plantain, all before a diamond-shaped diaper ground caved from the layer of green lacquer and bellow a band carved from the yellow lacquer layer representing the sky, the rounded sides of both box and cover with borders of five clawed dragons in mutual pursuit divided by 'flaming pearls' and amid cloud scrolls and flame wisps, the rims each with further bands of elaborate cash-coin motif, the vertical foot with a border of key-fret, the interior and base lacquered black, the nianhao written in a line to the underside 9 in.
