A VERY RARE LARGE FINELY CAST GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF VAIROCANA
MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY
A VERY RARE LARGE FINELY CAST GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF VAIROCANA MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY Seated majestically in dhyanasana with the sole of each foot incised with the Wheel of Transmigration, with hands raised and clasped in abhisekha mudra , wearing loose robes falling in pleats and folds and left open at the chest to expose an incised wan emblem above the sash-tied dhoti , the hems of the robes finely incised with a dense floral scroll, the finely and delicately cast face with serene expression flanked by pendulous ears suspending elaborate earrings, the hair in spiky curls surrounding the usnisa obscured by the tall five-point crown cast in openwork with small Buddhas seated on lotus bases borne atop scrolling clouds, the crown tied in back with two long tabs finely incised with further floral scroll terminating in three 'jewels' and falling onto the shoulders, the figure retaining much of its original gilding 20¼ in. (51.5 cm.) high
