A Very Rare French Revolutionary Period Sabre with Brass Hilt à Branche Tournante, for a Senior Republican Officer, circa 1790-95, with single-edged blade of petits Montmorency type, brass hilt formed of a lion’s head pommel cast in relief, the pelt extending to a full-length backpiece, oval guard drawn up at the front to a knuckle-guard, the former pierced with a symmetrical bold pattern of scrollwork, the latter profusely slotted with lozenges carried between pairs of opposing triangles, with additional outer guard formed of two pivoted bars decorated en suite, the borders decorated with a filed notched pattern throughout, and retaining its original grip bound with patterned copper wire, blade 67.5cm two Revolutionary period sabres with hilts of closely related construction see BLONDIEAU, Christian, Sabres Français 1680-1814, Paris 2002, p.140, colour plates p. 156.
