A VERY LARGE JAPANESE EXPORT COFFER 17TH CENTURY Of rectangular shape fitted with a domed, rectangular cover, lacquered on the cover in gold and black hiramaki-e with large scattered fans decorated with chrysanthemums, dragons, lotus, or plovers and fishing nets set on a same (sharkskin) ground, all within a wide border of half-chrysanthemum blooms completed on the matching border of the lower section of the coffer; the front long side of the coffer further decorated with fans lacquered in gold and black with phoenixes, cranes and willows, chrysanthemums and waterwheels and wistaria, the two short sides patterned with chevron reserves of flowers on sharkskin within half-chrysanthemum-bloom borders, the back long side with two sharkskin panels within line borders; the well of the interior green and the underside of the lid painted in gold with plants in a stream; fitted with two side loop handles and with copper mounts worked with tomo-e roundels and flowers or phoenix and bird medallions on geometric grounds- 52 1/8 x 23 3/8 x 25 in. (132.4 x 59.4 x 63.5 cm.), damages restored
