Beschreibung:

A UNIQUE 8 3/4-inch GAUGE GARDEN RAILWAY 2-2-0 LOCOMOTIVE, built approx. 1848 for John J. Thornycroft by his father Thomas Thornycroft sculptor, the locomotive, unlike virtually anything else at the time, incorporates a vertical riveted multi-tube copper boiler suspended between the "angle iron" and fitted with pressure and water gauges, level test cocks, blower and clack valves. The boiler is fed by horizontal hand feed pump. Steam is supplied to the engine by a spring-loaded vertical piston valve with displacement lubricator. The twin cylinder engine is carried horizontally beneath the frame on a curved bridge and has gunmetal cylinders approximately 1½in bore x 1½in stroke with valve chest under and trunk guides supported by a spectacle plate. The driving axle has two eccentrics with curved pushrods. The solid wheels are cast brass. Moulded mahogany stand, iron rails in cast chairs with wooden wedges, 23¾in (60cm) high, 40in (102cm) long Fußnoten The locomotive was reconditioned by John J. Thornycroft and Company Limited Engineers at their Pulford Street Works in 1920 and driven by Sir John J Thornycroft on the celebration of his Golden Wedding the same year. It is interesting to note that the layout would seem to be the precursor of the under-type steam wagons later made by Thornycroft and other manufacturers. Provenance: Property of The British Engineerium, Hove.
