JOSEON DYNASTY (LATE 19TH CENTURY)
A Two-tier Red and Black-lacquered Wood Cabinet Inlaid with Mother-of-Pearl Joseon dynasty (late 19th century) The rectangular cabinet on four legs comprised of a lower closed section with large red-lacquered interior compartment enclosed by two hinged doors and two rectangular drawers with black-lacquer interiors and comprised of an open upper section with black-lacquered top surface and red-lacquered lower surface, the black-lacquered faces of the lower doors inlaid in mother-of-pearl with panels of squirrels and grape vines within fretwork borders, the front edges inlaid with bands of bats and Daoist-derived precious emblems, the sides inlaid with an auspicious character medallion centered by four bats, the back of the cabinet applied with black lacquer only; the front two feet connected by a pierce-carved apron colored red 23¾ x 11 7/8 x 36½in. (60.2 x 30 x 92.6cm.)
