A TSUBA BY CHOSHU TOMOYUKI , A TSUBA BY ECHIZEN MYOCHIN YOSHIHISA AND EIGHT OTHERS Momoyama/Edo period (16th/19th century) A large Choshu tsuba carved in the polished plate with houses beside a stream with a rustic bridge, two men approaching the house, on the reverse another man approaching a house on the mountain and a bird-scarer hung from a cord, details inlaid in shibuichi and two colours of gold (a few missing), signed Juryushi Tomoyuki , 8.3cm.; a circular iron tsuba carved and pierced with six horses, signed Esshu no ju Miochin Yoshihisa saku , 7.3cm.; a circular tsuba carved and pierced with the left-hand side of one kiri-mon and the right-hand side of another, signed Choshu Hagi no ju Masatomi saku , 7.4cm.; an Edo kinko tsuba inlaid with the twelve animals of the zodiac in shakudo, shibuichi , copper, silver and two colours of gold, 7.75cm.; a cupped mokko tsuba , the plate decorated in shishiaibori with a chrysanthemum flower and leaves and a maple leaf against a woven surface, a few details in gold nunome-zogan , signed Yamashiro no kuni Nishijin no ju Umetada Tachibana Shigeyoshi , 8.7cm.; an almost circular iron nanban tsuba , carved and pierced with stepped lotus petals with opposed dragons amongst dense scrollwork, the seppadai of elongated mokko shape, sparsely carved in shishiai-bori with scrolls, 7.6cm.; an elongated oval iron tsuba , also inlaid in iron and carved with squirrels and grapes, some details in gold inlay and nunome-zogan , 7.9cm.; a large, circular iron Heianjo tsuba with a four-lobed piercing, inlaid with scrolling vines and aoi leaves in brass and some silver, some of which are arranged in roundels, three on the front and two on the back of the tsuba , the very small kogai-ana may have been added, 9cm.; a square iron nanban tsuba , with slightly indented corners, carved and pierced with dragons, fish, clouds, waves and a pavilion, with a rectangular seppa-dai , 7.55cm.; and an almost circular iron tsuba , the plate incised with radiating Amida-yasurime and inlaid with a beetle in shakudo and a snake and a vine in gilt shibuichi , on the reverse a frog in shibuichi , with a few bamboo leaves and stones inlaid in two colours of gold, signed Yasuchika , possibly second or third generation, 7cm.
