A SUPERB PRIVATE COLLECTION OF FINE WINES, INCLUDING RARE BORDEAUX, BURGUNDY AND RENOWNED WINES FROM PIEDMONT AND SASSICAIA The wines in this excellent collection (lots 423 to 602) have recently been removed from the superb cellar of a property on the historical outskirts of the city of Rome. The owner, a knowledgeable and sophisticated collector, has been gathering and consuming top quality wines from both France and Italy for several decades, but has now taken the decision to rationalise his cellar and offer some of the older and more interesting wines for others to enjoy via this sale. The wines were stored either in the purpose built, temperature and humidity-controlled cellar of the Villa or 'filed' in a succession of large Eurocave cabinets adjacent to the main cellar. All the bottles were inspected in situ and then catalogued and packed by Christie's staff prior to transport to our cellars in Gloucestershire. The collection features a wide range of French and Italian wines reflecting the passions of the owner over the last 50 years of wine production. Highlights include excellent Vintage Port, a portfolio of top quality Bordeaux ranging from Mouton-Rothschild 1945, Pétrus 1947 and ultra-rare Lafleur 1949 through the classic vintages of the 1950's and 1960's, right up to the 'modern classics' - First-Growths of the 1982 vintage. The offering continues with interesting mature Sauternes and then switches to Burgundy with an excellent range of wines, much of it from DRC and Drouhin, in the vintages 1959-1978. The cellar concludes with a broad Italian selection of both traditional and Super-Tuscan origin, including the produce of Bruno Giacosa, Giacomo Conterno and Mascarello and notably, Gaja's Barbaresco from rare, mature vintages. We are also pleased to include a range of Sassicaia from eight vintages including two full cases of their first commercial release of 1968. Lying in Gloucestershire at Christie's (Octavian) Taylor--Vintage 1935 Two Oporto-bottled, three bottled by Berry Bros. & Rudd and one bottled in the U.K. Four with metal capsules, one wax with capsule and one capsule removed to reveal branded cork. No labels, bin-soiled bottles. Levels: five base of neck and one mid/upper-shoulder Tasting note: Outstandingly the best 1935 and one of the greatest ports of this century...Classic bouquet...with inimitable Taylor backbone. Superb. Five stars. Last tasted January 2001. MB. 6 bottles per lot
