His miniature scenes are based on Chinese lacquer, hardstone and mother-of-pearl inlays of the 18th and 19th centuries, Islamic friezes and miniatures. His fairy-tale world also includes European narrative genre-scenes. His work was commissioned by French jewellers in the 1920's; several pieces in Cartier's production can be safely attributed to him. Makovsky's signature is an ornamented or Vemac (his initials), but his work is often unsigned. The present case bears his signature on the front mosaic
