A Sultan in conversation with his Courtiers, Ottoman miniature on paper [Ottoman Turkey, probably c. 1600] single leaf, gouache and ink on paper, depicting an enthroned sultan, seated in a palace garden, facing courtiers, a palace wall enclosing them all with soldiers keeping watch from behind, image heightened in gold, one small spot, a little scratched and rubbed with some very light restoration to some sections, overall very presentable, 125 by 95 mm.; mounted on thick card, with gold-speckled paper border, in modern card mount The art of Persian miniature drawing was not commonly used in the Ottoman regions until the seventeenth century. The present miniature is a very fine and early example of this form of miniature drawing, adapted by the Ottomans to suit their manuscript production techniques.
