Beschreibung:

A substantial early Gothic sculpted limestone column capital, probably south west German, 13th century, of tri-rectangular section, the sides carved in high relief with stylised acanthus leaves and fruiting vines, 39cm high, 75cm wide, 56cm deep The inward turning scrollwork in this capital is unusual, but does appear in some instances in the Baden-Württemberg district of Germany. Comparable capitals can be seen atop the entrance portal columns at the 13th century Walterichskapelle in Murrhardt for instance. In these, the tendrilous stems of the palmette at each side rise in a perpendicular manner to the upper corners, before curling back inwards towards the centre, in a way which is opposite to the more usual form. They come together, meeting at a central downward pointing palmette which is again reminiscent of the capital offered here Corresponding patterns can be seen at Denkendorf in the same region. In both these German examples the very formalised and schematic nature of the rising stems, as well as the sharp and stylised form of the fluted palmette leaves is certainly reminscent of the carved detail in the capital in this lot
