Jonathan Stanton is recorded as working between 1758 and 1767 in London, and his touchmark is recorded in Stockel. Barrel made without sights and marked on top with "LONDON", offset proofs with Stanton's touchmark, "(Crown) / CP" "(Crown) / V", and florals at tang and just in front of "LONDON". Lock signed "STANTON" in center. Swan neck cock. Brass tipped ramrod retained by single reinforced ferrule with turning. Brass sideplate, trigger guard, and butt with decorated stirrups. Trigger guard engraved with floral and urn finial. Buttcap with grotesque of a human head. CONDITION: Very good. Iron with freckling throughout and a few deeper areas oxidation, a European style cleaning has obliterated part of the "LONDON" signature on barrel and some of the finer engraving details, including some of Stanton's signature on lock. Brass has acquired a pleasing mustard patina. Wood is very good with some bumps are bruises but no discernible cracks, was gently sanded and varnished at one point, now shy to metal. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand, bore is very good with even oxidation throughout.
