A square piano by Rolfe, London, circa 1805 The mahogany case cross-banded with satinwood and inlaid with geometric fruitwood stringing, raised on a frame stand veneered en suite and with brass castors and paterae. Shelf underneath. The satinwood veneered nameboard cross-banded with rosewood and inlaid with ebony and boxwood lines and with two pierced panels. Painted with Turk’s cap lilies, primulas, sweet peas, roses and auricula. Inscribed on a red painted oval plaque beneath a foliate garland: William Rolfe, No 112 Cheapside London. The five and a half octave keyboard FF–c4 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. Double action with pedal operated over-dampers.
