See illustration On July 26th 1971, this flag was carried aboard the Apollo 15 spacecraft's Command Module 'Endeavour', by Colonel Alfred M. Worden, USAF. The flag was amongst the personal effects Colonel Worden carried in his space suit and remained there for the whole of the 500,000 mile spaceflight. Colonel Worden was the Command Module pilot on Apollo 15, and remained in the spacecraft, circumnavigating the Moon, whilst his two companions, Colonel Jim Irwin and Colonel Dave Scott, explored the Moon's surface. They were the fourth crew to land on the Moon's surface and spent nearly 20 hours there. On their return, and during their flight back some 177,225 miles from Earth, Colonel Worden carried out a 40 minute EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity) deep space walk outside the spacecraft to retrieve a camera. With him went this flag, possibly one of the only flags that has ever been in deep space itself.
