A SIENA (TERCHI) MAIOLICA CAMPANA-SHAPED VASE AND COVER CIRCA 1730 Painted by Bartolomeo Terchi and signed Bar Terchi , with a continuous scene of a young woman seated in a boat, surrounded by soldiers preparing to unload supplies as they approach the shore, by a wooded landscape with rocky cliffs, the lower body applied with gilt grotesques issuing scrolls and painted with further scenes of putti at play and with boats on the water in the distance beyond the wooded cliffs, the brown-ground foot applied with gilt feathered and tasselled scrolls and three lizards, the upper rim with two rows of gilt female and animal masks issuing rocaille scrollwork, the brown waisted cover with a band of gilt ovolo ornament below a conical finial (vase detachable from foot, restoration to upper rim and some retouched areas to scene around body, foot and cover restored) 27 in. (68.6 cm.) high
