Perhaps the most remarkable sword in the Squier Collection is this massive 30.9375" long tachi with one side of the tang completely covered in kanji. The blade with mokume hada . Nakago signed with twenty-character signature " Rakuyo ju Ozaki Nagato (no) Suke Tenryushi Fujiwara Masataka", with further characters stating this sword was made in the 62nd year of the smith's life. Also dated Bunkyu 3 (1863). Silver plated habaki of Mt. Fuji over waves. This remarkable tour de force of the Japanese swordsmith's art was a center piece of the Squier collection, and will be in the same in the collection of the lucky winning bidder. Nakago inscribed with legend: "The Imperial household was thrown into a turmoil. Accordingly, the Emperor ordered Satsuma, Aizu, and Yodo lords to protect the gates of the palace for three days, and they did so with rifle and cannon. A storm began to blow furiously, and they couldn't hide themselves, even under the trees. When all was peace and quiet again, the Emperor praised their meritorious conduct and awarded them many gold coins. They then took the coins to the swordsmith and had them made into samurai swords. It is said that these precious swords were handed down from generation to generation, as heirlooms of the lord's families." Includes N.T.H.K. origami dated Showa 54 (1979) along with translation of legend on nakago. Condition: Blade has some very minor staining, almost polished in full. Nakago in shinshinto patinated condition.
