A SET OF SIX FINE QUEEN ANNE SILVER SOUP PLATES maker's mark of Philip Rollos London, 1706 Of plain circular form, the broad rims each engraved with a coat-of-arms, marked on reverse - 9¾in. (24.8cm.) diam. 109ozs. (3,418grs.) The arms are those of Hope for Charles, 1st Earl of Hopetoun (1681-1742), son of John Hope of Hopetoun and Niddry and Margaret, eldest daughter of John Hamilton 4th Earl of Haddington. In 1699 he married Henrietta, only daughter William Johnstone 1st Marquess of Annandale. Charles was M.P. for Linlithgow in 1702 and became a Privy Counsellor in 1703. In the same year he was created Earl of Hopetoun, Viscount Aithrie and Baron Hope. (6)
