A set of eight mahogany dining chairs including two open armchairs of mid Georgian design, each with a shaped toprail and pierced looped back carved with scrolling foliage and bellflowers above a close-studded brown leather seat, on cabriole legs headed by C-scrolls and lion masks with hairy paw feet, two of a later date, some carved with initials E.J.F. This set is close in design to the celebrated set of chairs in the Saloon at Stourhead, attributed to Giles Grendy and recovered at a later date by Chippendale the younger, although differing in the carved detail of the legs. Compare the set of sixteen chairs sold in these rooms 21 November 1990, Lot 344. (8)
