Publisher: Printed by John Gill, printer to the General Assembly Date: 1778 Description: 39 pp. 21.5x13.5 cm (8½x5½"), unbound sewn signatures. First Edition. The sermon includes material on the defeat of Burgoyne and other revolutionary war activity. Payson declares that we must "esteem civil liberty as the greatest of all human blessings from the people and is under their direction and control," with "useful checks" against the exercise of excessive power by any one person or branch of government. Payson extolls "the memorable and compleat victory obtained over Gen Burgoyne, and his whole army may prove one of the capital events that decides the war, and establishes the independency of these states." Evans 15956. Lot Amendments Condition: Some mostly marginal staining and other wear, lower half of half-title missing; good. Item number: 256334
